Internet Safety and Copyright

As teachers, the two most significant legal and ethical issues you will face involve copyright law and internet safety.  We will be discussing the implications of these issues throughout the semester.  The activities for this week are designed to give you strong baseline knowledge of copyright and fair use guidelines as well as time to consider the precautions necessary to provide students with a safe experience when learning using the Internet.

• Go to the Video Blog and watch my message about Internet Safety and Copyright on the IP&T 286 Group blog.
• Comment on this week's Gospel Insights Presentation(s). Think about the message as well as the presentation of the message.  What have you learned from their presentation?  How will you apply their message in your life?  What suggestions can you offer the author for making the presentation more effective?  What ideas does their presentation give you for future presentations that you may make? (10 minutes)
• Contribute to or comment on the Discussion Rubric.  Your participation in class discussions, both text-based and video-based, will be evaluated by this rubric.  This is your chance to help set the assessment standards. (10 minutes)

Internet Safety

• Conduct some research on Internet Safety and then take the Internet Safety Quiz on Classmarker.com.  You should have received an login and password in your email.  (approximately 60 minutes)
  • Watch the Internet Safety Presentation created by last semester's students.
  • Visit the listing for "Internet" in the Gospel Topics section of the Gospel Library on LDS.org and read the entry, the additional information, and your choice of at least one of the Church Magazine Articles listed.  As you read, think of ways that you might answer the question, "How will you use the 'technological miracle' of the Internet to educate without endangering?"
  • Review this Acceptable Use Policy for SanPete County in Utah.  Policies such as this are typical in most school districts.  What additional measures must you take as a teacher to help your students stay safe?
• Alternative: Follow the link to the i-Learn Online page on the iSafe website and complete the iSafe certification process.  It takes between 4-6 hours to complete the certification process, but it is a certification that you can list on your resume.  Additionally, because this is a time consuming option, you can replace one of the future major projects for this course if you complete the i-Safe certification process.  If you choose to do this, please note in your learning contract which project you want to replace and submit it for my approval.  If you complete the iSafe certifcation process, you will not need to take the Internet Safety Quiz for this course.  Here is a guide ( iSAFE registration job aid revised.pdf) to help you through the iSafe registration process.

Copyright

• Conduct some research on Copyright and Fair Use and then take the Copyright and Fair Use Quiz on Classmarker.com.  You should have received an login and password in your email. (40 minutes)  
  • Visit the Creative Commons website and learn what a Creative Commons license is.
  • Visit copyright in the k12 classroom and explore your choice of the cases.  The most applicaple cases for this course have to do with multimedia, music, videos, and images.  
  • Carefully reveiew the guidelines in this document ( copyright guidelines.pdf ) and then downlad this Jeopardy game ( Copyright Jeopardy.ppt) to test your knowledge of copyright law and fair use guidlines before taking the quiz.  (Note: The Jeopardy game is meant as a teaching tool, most of the questions would not be valid items for an assessment such as a quiz.)
  • Alternative: Instead of researching the above resources, you can complete the Copyright Tutorial provided by BYU's Copyright Liscensing Office and request your official Copyright Tutorial Certificate. The tutorial will take approximately 40 minutes.  If you choose the tutorial, you will not have to take the additional Copyright Quiz below, since a quiz is part of the tutorial process.
